The Story Behind Burnt Church
Every great spirit begins with a story. Ours begins with a road, a ruin, and a mystery that still lingers in the Lowcountry air.
The Mystery of Burnt Church Road
Burnt Church Distillery draws its name from Burnt Church Road in Bluffton, South Carolina — a quiet stretch of land steeped in legend. Local lore tells of a small wooden church that once stood here in the late 1700s, burned to the ground under mysterious circumstances.
No official records remain. No confirmed cause was ever found. What endures is the echo of its presence — a reminder that history does not always reveal itself fully, and that some truths are meant to be felt, not explained.
It was this sense of reverence, curiosity, and unresolved beauty that inspired Burnt Church Distillery.

"A place where heritage and craftsmanship converge — where spirits are not simply produced, but honored."
A Vision Takes Form
Our founders envisioned a place where heritage and craftsmanship converge — where spirits are not simply produced, but honored. A distillery that would pay tribute to the Lowcountry's rich cultural past while forging a bold new legacy through innovation, artistry, and community.

More Than a Distillery
From the beginning, Burnt Church was designed as a destination, not just a distillery. A gathering place. A sanctuary of flavor. A home for discovery.
Every element of our campus was thoughtfully created to immerse guests in story, process, and experience — from The Study, where history and legend intertwine, to The Sanctuary, where spirits are crafted, shared, and celebrated.

Our Mission
We’re more than makers of fine spirits — we create experiences with meaning. Founded in Bluffton, South Carolina, Burnt Church Distillery was built to celebrate the Lowcountry’s history, craftsmanship and community. Every detail — from our spirits to our architecture — is inspired by the land, the people and the mysteries that surround the name Burnt Church. We honor the past, embrace the present and raise a glass to what’s to come.

Tradition Meets Innovation
We draw from time-honored distillation methods, refined by modern technique and guided by relentless experimentation. Each spirit is a balance of heritage and innovation — respecting what came before while pushing toward what's possible.
Farm to Bottle
People often ask what makes our spirits different, and the answer is simple: we use local grains and ingredients every chance we get. Each of our signature whiskeys is made with South Carolina–grown grains from Palmetto Malt and Marsh Hen Mill, trusted producers who share our commitment to quality and sustainability.
These grains aren’t just ingredients — they’re the soul of our spirits and the secret behind their one-of-a-kind character. From the field to your glass, every pour tells a story of the Lowcountry’s land, labor and legacy.

Authentic Spirits Crafted in the Lowcountry
Our spirits reflect the same devotion. Each bottle is shaped by patience, curiosity, and respect for tradition. We draw from time-honored distillation methods, refined by modern technique and guided by relentless experimentation. The result is a portfolio of spirits that are bold yet balanced, expressive yet approachable — crafted to honor the past while inviting new rituals.

A Legacy of Purpose
Through charitable partnerships, community events and local collaborations, we strive to uplift those who make this region so special. Every bottle we make is an opportunity to pour purpose back into the place we proudly call home.
Because true legacy isn’t just distilled — it’s shared.
Our Founders
If Billy J. Watterson is known as the brains behind Burnt Church Distillery, then Sean Watterson is the hands.
A true entrepreneur, Billy has built and led numerous brands over the past two decades. When he discovered the Lowcountry in 2002, he was captivated by its effortless charm, Southern hospitality and timeless beauty. His love for this place — and its deep-rooted traditions — inspired his latest and most personal endeavor: Burnt Church Distillery.
Sean is a self-taught craftsman — a modern-day Renaissance man who brings equal parts art, science and soul to his work. He balances precision with passion, crafting each spirit with care and intention so that even the most discerning whiskey connoisseurs take notice.
Together, the Watterson brothers share a devotion to creating authentic Lowcountry spirits that honor the region’s history and give back to its community. Their vision is simple yet profound — to make a heartfelt impact on all who come to learn, taste and discover.
